Jack Simon Hosts Tour of Spring Grove Cemetery, Veterans Day 2007: Civil War Medal of Honor Winners and the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Jack Simon, Cincinnati CWRT Trustee and local historian, led eighteen intrepid participants on a tour of Civil War Medal of Honor winner graves and the 5th OVI monument at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati on a soggy Veterans Day 2007. Included were the following gravesites:

- Pvt John P. Murphy, 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company K: awarded the Medal of Honor on 11 Sep 1866 for his actions at Antietam on 17 Sep 1862.

- First Sgt John H. Brown, 47th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A: awarded the Medal of Honor on 24 Aug 1896 for his actions at Vicksburg on 19 May 1863.

- Seaman John Dorman, USS Carondelet: awarded the Medal of Honor on 18 Apr 1864 for his actions throughout the engagements of the Carondelet.

- Pvt. George Loyd, 122nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A: awarded the Medal of Honor on 16 Apr 1891 for his actions at Petersburg on 2 Apr 1865.

- BG Manning F. Force, First Brigade, Third Division, XVII Corps: awarded the Medal of Honor on 31 Mar 1892 for his actions at Atlanta on 22 Jul 1864.

The tour also visited the monument of the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a unit recruited in Cincinnati. Major engagements among its 28 battles were at Kernstown, Port Republic, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Lookout Mountain, and the Atlanta Campaign. 146 members of the 5th were killed or died from wounds, and 57 died from disease and accidents.

Flag Placement at 5th OVI Placing the flag at the 5th OVI Monument
5th OVI Plaque Plaque on the 5th OVI Monument. The words "Boys Keep the Colors Up" were the words spoken by Capt. George B. Whitcom at Kernstown on 23 Mar 1862 as he picked up the colors after five color bearers had been killed or wounded. Capt. Whitcom was killed instantly. 1200 people participated in his funeral procession in Cincinnati the following week.
